“Trying to catch the 53 Woodward northbound from downtown last week after work, I waited for an hour in a snowbank for it to arrive. Usually I just walk the hour home, but I felt a cold coming on and was trying in vain to save myself some time breathing in the cold air. Waiting with me was another rider who spent the entire hour leaning on a cane, with nowhere to sit. When we finally boarded the bus, it only went a block and a half before the driver pulled over, said “I gotta talk to my supervisor,” and walked off the bus. We spent at least ten minutes parked on the side of the road while our driver talked with someone outside. Toward the end of our wait, I started recording our motionless bus because it was so ridiculous. Eventually the driver had myself and the other rider get off the bus and put us on a DIFFERENT 53 Northbound bus, which was overpacked with people stuffed into the aisle. It took us a half hour to get from downtown to Mack & Woodward due to all of the traffic from the M-1 Rail construction, at which point myself and a few other riders asked to be let out in the middle of halted traffic to try our luck walking home. I really felt for our bus driver, who was obviously frustrated as well but there was really nothing he could do. My total commute home that day took over TWO HOURS for just a two mile journey. “Waited this morning from just before 9am at Woodward and Canfield. For the 53 northbound. Five 53 southbound went past. Two northbound smart buses. An hour and 45 minutes later two fully packed ddots show up. When I arrived- I sent a text to that one number and checked the ddot official app. Both told me a bus should arrive with in 9 minutes. It never came. What happened to that bus? It was even on the apps little radar thing. Ghost bus? Picking up the wrong GPS?” – via facebook submission
“SB Woodward, 7:45 a.m. Despite the huge snow drifts, my bus arrived only 20 minutes later than what the app said. The snow was pouring into my boots and I would have sat on the bus bench, but it had no shelter and was covered in ice and snow. During the ride, a fellow passenger got an angry call from what I assume was his boss. He pleaded with the man on the phone, saying that he had been waiting on the bus since 5:50 and would be there soon. From the way the other riders nodded their heads, I knew he wasn’t the only one. When the bus dropped me off downtown, the snow on the sidewalk was almost up to the parking meters. I walked the rest of the way to work in the street.” – via email submission
“I waited over an hour for the Woodward going northbound last Friday evening. Absolutely ridiculous to wait over an hour for a bus on the city’s MAIN line, while millions of dollars are being spent on a rail system that won’t even benefit the people that actually NEED the public transportation system. When the bus finally came, guess what happened? It passed us up because it was jammed packed. I had to wait 10 more minutes for another bus to come. Meanwhile, while waiting for the bus, I saw at least 4 buses going down Woodward going South. I was at Warren and Woodward, which is a hop, skip and a jump from downtown, so once the southbound buses made it downtown, they didn’t come back to go back down the line.” – via facebook submission
“After weeks of being dropped off at the suicide stop just south of the light at Woodward and Kirby, yesterday evening I was dropped off several hundred feet south of the DIA entrance. Bus driver says in response to my query, “they moved the stop…” They moved the stop in less than 24 hours, so I know that change was not posted anywhere…smh” -via facebook submission
“Caught the Woodward bus this morning (12/4) trying to get downtown for work, and they picked me up at Canfield (a half hour late). An old woman pulled the cord just as I got on and asked to be dropped at Willis. The bus driver kept going and said ‘I’m sorry, but I’m not supposed to let you out here. I have to let you out by the DSO on Mack.’ The woman was upset and said ‘Since when? I got let out there the other day. I gotta walk from all the way down there?’ There does not seem to be a consistent protocol for this stretch of Woodward, and the drivers appear just as confused as we are! I hope somebody figures this out soon. Feels like it changes every day!” – via email submission
“11.22.14 Waiting at the stop at Alexandrine and Woodward that I had been picked up from a few days prior. Bus passes waving at me and then stops a few block ahead. I then realized the stop had moved up to where the buses only sign was at the next light north. No sign at stop indicating change. Have noticed a lot of confused rerouting happening with construction, not sure if the drivers even know what is going on.” – via facebook submission
